You remember #Apple scanning all images on your #mobile device?If you have an #Android #phone, a new app that doesn't appear in your menu has been automatically and silently installed (or soon will be) by #Google. It is called #AndroidSystemSafetyCore and does exactly the same - scan all images on your device as well as all incoming ones (via messaging). The new spin is that it does so "to protect your #privacy".
You can uninstall this app safely via System -> Apps.

Forgive me if I'm not understanding correctly, but to clarify:
That statement could be misconstrued to suggest that "on-device machine learning models usable by applications to classify content" is different and distinct from "client-side scanning". To clarify, those're two ways of saying the same thing, with one being more specific. Do you really intend to just point out that it doesn't report things to Google or anyone else by default, and/or that the "client side scanning" is a scan-on-request thing, and not a let's-scan-the-whole-device-by-default thing?
What's stopping any app from using the output of the "on-device machine learning models" to report to third parties?
@AnachronistJohn @hipsterelectron @jonny We're pointing out neither this app or Google Messages is using it to report something. It's also not scanning for illegal content. Apps also don't need this app to use local ML models. It only provides certain already made models. Apps have always been able to run local classifiers and can use hardware acceleration for it, which has been there for many years. It's not something which just showed up recently with the recent AI craze.
@AnachronistJohn @hipsterelectron @jonny People are using the term client side scanning to refer to doing content scanning for a service on the client side and reporting to the service. That's not what this is doing. This also doesn't somehow enable that in a way that wasn't already doable by any apps wanting to do it. It's a specific implementation of detecting certain kinds of content used by Google Messages for local warnings and blurring with a dialog to bypass it.

A few folks are questioning if AI scanning like what Android is doing can be missused. The last time a similar feature was coming to Apple's iOS the media rightly described it as an extremely dangerous warrantless surveillance tool.
Regardless of what Android developers intended this client side scanner to do it will be enlisted by governments of the world to spy on you and break strong encryption.

@jack according to the Google developer page that this claim is based on, that app does not scan pictures, it scans applications to ensure that they have not been compromised with something like a man-in-the-middle attack. The only way this could refer to an image is talking about a file structure image, nothing to do with actual graphics.

@nullagent I have been using an Ubuntu phone for a while now, despite it still being very niche and a lot of things not working properly yet. Now, for the first time in a while, I am grateful that I got rid of Android in time and have entirely stopped considering to get it back. We need to invest a lot more into Linux for smartphones, and we need to do it fast.

@jack Honestly at this point we should just function under the assumption that any internet connected device, especially smartphones, is going to do something like this. If it's not doing it already.
It also wouldn't shock me if just removing them wasn't enough, as I'm assuming they'll reinstall themselves.

Danke für die Erklärung. Ich kannte den Begriff bzw. Vergleich mit den Löffeln, wusste aber nicht, wo er herkommt.
ich hab mich wegen den Spoons voll mit meiner Freundin gestritten. Ich glaube das ganz viele Menschen eine bestimmte Ladung an Batterie/ Energie haben, die irgendwann leer ist. Aber meine Freundin kam irgendwann mit den Spoons und ich hatte keinen Plan was sie von mir wollte. Sie wollte nur sagen, sie hat keine Energie mehr. Aber dafür hätte ich die Löffel nicht gebraucht. Man bräuchte nicht die Spoons, wenn man Leuten glaubt, dass sie es halt gerade nur zum duschen schaffen.

Auch Trauma eine chronische Wunde einer alten Verletzung kann dazu führen, dass wir einfach zu wenige Löffel haben. Und gucken müssen, wo wir welche herbekommen🥄

Every time I log into Fedi, I see another post with a guide called something like "Activist's Guide to Smartphones" or "Phone Security Guide for Protesters," and every single one of these assumes that the threat model is the kind of police force that exists under liberal democracy where the law will afford significant protections to protesters. The world is changing, and these guides not only fail to address the threat of an actively hostile fascistic anti-democratic occupying force (I refer here to the police), but such guides generally are limited to "what" and "how" but miss the more critical "why."
If you believe that you are facing fascism (or even something close to it), can I please please please convince you to read something written by anarchists who have faced serious repression and are trying to convey just how much phones can lead to the imprisonment of you and your friends for even things that are allegedly "legal."

@jhavok its possible even here in Europe for a *civillian* to get an effective ANPR reader for their mobile phone which sends the registration marks up to the cloud for later use (via an API).
Its main use case is for car park attendants and garage workers, but I literally only had to "pinky swear" I would obey GDPR to get it, and at close range it works as well as the ones the Police have (I tried it on my own car and some fleet cars at work)

i'm always telling people "it's not your phone - it belongs to the manufacturer, and everything you do is logged by the OS."

I'm not an expert but I've always thought things like consumer VPNs, password management software and anti-virus software as increasing your risk, not decreasing it.
The central point is they aggregate your information into the hands of one agent, and agent you don't know - making it easier for them, or those that attack them to get at your data.
This is a question - I'd welcome comments.
@rzeta0 This always comes down to "what's your threat model." For most people, a cloud-based password manager is the best solution. I use an offline one I manually sync between devices. Pen and paper can be your password manager, but unless you're super human, most people can't come up with sufficiently random and different passwords for their hundreds of sites they have to log in to. I don't use anti-virus, but I also use Linux so it's a slightly different model there too. VPNs protect against a narrow set of threats and for those they are useful. When people treat VPNs like Tor, they're gonna have a bad time.

1. All your passwords in one online service means adversaries (eg the state) have only one place to get your passwords. Perhaps this comes down to threat model as you say
2. Isn't Tor a massive honeypot? It emerged from the US military. If it truly is as effective as people say it is, then it would already be banned already, surely?
@rzeta0 Specifically password managers are there to improve the entropy of your passwords and gain insights on when a password was leaked (through haveibeenpwned or similar) automatically. If (and that’s a big if) you manage to create good, long, unique passwords and very regularly check such services… you may as well not use one.
Concerning the attack on password managers: You don’t upload your passwords anywhere, but an encrypted blob. Any cryptographic encryption is indistinguishable from random data – you could’ve literally uploaded a random.zip with random bytes to GDrive and it would give the Feds as much knowledge about your passwords as your password manager.
The good thing about them is that they are local first software. Everything crucial already happens on your device: En-/Decryption, deduplication, generation of passwords etc. It’s much easier for feds to just demand the services you are registered at to give them access to your data too.

Of course backdooring your device always is an option, but smart phones have great app integrity protection and will refuse running apps with invalid signatures. It’s quite hard to remotely bring up a forged version of your password manager and make it run it. It’s probably much easier to attack you elsewhere and get the passwords in-flight or anywhere else.
For phone security, run GrapheneOS on a modern Pixel or at least iOS with Lockdown and Advanced Protection enabled.

Isn't it more likely that the app provider themselves will release "official updates" with the backdoors ... as a result of direction from the state?
I seem to recall some infosec work I did ages ago and we were very alive to the fact that a day-1 device is not the same as an updated day-2 device.
I would love to use GrapheneOS just to get rid of the commercial-grade ads/tracking and generally lower resource consumption ... but sadly I'm told banking apps dont' run.

I remember Naomi Wu being concerned about your phone's keyboard app years ago, and that is an axis of attack I still don't see addressed in any guides.
Your phone uses an app for your keyboard, and most have a key logger or "AI" or "dictionary learning" feature.
It scans your contacts.
Check it's settings.
But I think the point you're trying to make is that none of this will help you the cops don't care about your rights, if ice doesn't care about your rights, if NSA wants your ass, it's already over.
Your rights won't matter once you're in solitary in a federal building or across state lines.

@sour Better than smart phones? No way. It’s why the text begins with “use a smart phone”. Mobile security is *way* ahead of general computer security and covers many more threat scenarios. Basically, if your laptop is in the hands of any decent adversary it’s over. At worst they can directly read out anything, at best (for you) they can only modify it in a way that’s not recognizable by you but will effectively covertly give them full access. Modern macBooks may be the only exception here.
Disregarding physical access, things become a lot more tricky. With Linux you usually don’t download a .exe from a website and run it. That closes a big attack vector. You can lock it down quite well to also restrict execution of other binaries – if you know your way about. But in the end, the security model of a PC is very leaky.
My recommendation is to get Pixel phone with GrapheneOS or an iOS device with Lockdown and Advanced Protection enabled. For your laptop, use fedora or ChromeOS (beware, the latter might get discontinued soon), or an ARM macOS with Lockdown etc. enabled, or at least Windows Pro and enable complete BitLocker on there. You can run Qubes for specific tasks if you want to.
@sour Absolutely! Security focused live systems are neat for some throwaway work, just do recognize that if the hardware is tampered with, it's hard for the OS to defend against that.
But most attacks that work well against Linux but not so against modern Windows/macOS are attacks targeting the installed OS. With a live system you circumvent that. In theory, you can harden a Linux to a similar degree as Windows BitLocker (i.e., measuring Secure Boot state + long password or fido2 stick, using
signed UKIs, etc.) or perhaps even more than that, but it's not the default and requires quite some knowledge.
@ljrk @sour not that you're wrong but I suspect your level of technicality is maybe too much here. I think maybe the answer is: Tails is good for ephemeral things and is quite anon, but its less commonly use for daily activity.
But to really even answer the question, we need to step back and ask why they want to use Tails in the first place

Basically: tails and stuff is good for ad-hoc work for ephemeral things but you should not completely neglect the hardware you are doing this on. If the cops modify it, no tails will be safe.
Linux, in generally, is safe against malware downloaded etc., but very hard to defend against attackers with physical access or who target you directly.

@sour @ljrk Yes, so if you want to remove photos from a phone's internal storage, a laptop harddrive, an external harddrive, or something like an SD card, you could do that with Tails, but you don't need to. You can just use `srm`, though forensics is not my forte, so someone else might be able to more accurately direct you.

@sour Securely wiping data is a very hard problem. Srm is unfortunately not updated for 10 years and hard drive technology has changed a lot since. Especially flash storage (SSDs, USB sticks, etc.) are hard to wipe securely, more specific info is here:

The only secure way is to simply never produce the data in the first place, or only within an encrypted volume and then throw away the key. Securely wiping is almost dead.
Using tails for temporary computing is fine though.
Overwhelmingly these guides seem to come from InfoSec or civil liberties focused individuals, groups, or NGOs, but bloody hell, the danger they face tends to pale in comparison to what radicals face, and the level of concern they have is likely far lower than it should be. Watching across the pond at this advice circulating, all I can think is that such liberal notions of rights are security are going to get activists killed or imprisoned for life.
(not that my advice is perfect. always get a second source. compare what we/i have written to these liberal guides, and diligently study where and how they diverge.)

Apple's "Advanced Data Protection" will encrypt most things now. It is of course opt in, and there's a section dedicated to what is not encrypted; including iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendar, modification time and deduplication hash type stuff metadata. I haven't done a super thorough investigation because I'm not qualified.

Trumpism is both a driver and symptom of declining US power.
As the US government hemorrhages competent civil servants, withdraws from the hegemonic international institutions it established itself, alienates and closes itself off from trade partners, and focuses on trivial inanities, the US is both admitting to how much its power has already declined and accelerating that decline.
Don’t get me wrong, the US has a lot of legacy power and Trump et al can still do a lot of harm at home and around the world, but at a declining rate.

Trump will accelerate a process that has been in place for decades now—the losses in Iraq and Afghanistan, the abdication of the Syria “red lines,” the declining life expectancy and repeated economic crises…the US simply can’t sustain its hegemonic status anymore.
Very early on in his first presidency, Trump caused our national credit rating to go down. This had never happened before, in fact, all other countries’ credit ratings were defined by how much worse they were than the USA’s.
This is basically why a lot of inflation happened and no one ever talks about it.
Trump is absolutely shredding the international capitalist system. I would prefer a controlled burn, but in some ways, this is OK too.

I've stopped watching after 4 minutes. The USA was based on slavery, exploitation, mass murder and racism. And it still has not freed itself from that history. In fact it is the most war mongering country on the planet. It is good to be able to recognize fascism but not like this. Stop idolizing the USA with its destructive capitalism and help to ban death sentences in the USA, help to get gun control, save the school children, tax the ultra rich, stop oil drilling and so on.
Only the intro is US-centric. If you continue watching, it becomes really interesting.

@regendans If you skip the useless intro (and maybe the outro), the message is interesting and important. It is mostly about what happened in Germany and how the Nazis got their power. There are surely some US propaganda messages (it almost makes it look like only Germans died in the war for example), but for the most part, it invites us to stay united and fight for everybody's freedom. The main message is that we are all part of some minority and we are stronger together than divided.

@regendans I had to stop at around the 10 minute mark where the narrator was talking about how when the government says they are prosperous she can’t even tell her husband there’s no food because the government says they are prosperous.
It was describing the whole entire Biden presidency. You can’t talk about how everything is more expensive, you can’t talk about how Covid is ripping through the population so much we have a pharmacist shortage in New Hampshire. You can’t talk about how women lost reproductive rights because the Dems thought that wouldn’t mean a slam dunk win.
You’re only allowed to say Trump bad, but when Biden did the same things that Trump does, you can’t talk about how that’s bad. Blue king GOOD!

The intro pumping up the US is mainly there to make the point that the man the intro centers on is taking some of the good things in the US for granted, and not really thinking about what makes them possible. Essentially, it's setting up *why* he's a sucker.

Yeah, this is definitely something that has to be watched all the way through before you judge it.
For example there's a scene showing Nazis ripping down communist posters, and the film criticises the Nazis for doing so. That's not something typical in modern American political discourse, especially a film made by the US army.
The basic message is minorities of all kinds are a gift to society and all need to be protected. It's saying when one minority is attacked the rest are in danger, because that's how Nazis operate: split everyone up and squash each group one by one.

I read something on Mastodon in the last week that if you're a good person living a good life and being kind to others, you are by your continued existence contributing towards good and away from evil. The intent was to comfort those who are too exhausted at the moment to "fight" right now. I think it makes sense. So basically I'm a human who needs a robot to prove to another robot that I am not a robot. Without my robot, the other robot would have thought I was a robot. Those captchas need to die. It was a stupid idea in the first place, and now AI is better at them than we are, so they've become completely pointless.
I try to avoid most sites using them, but some sites that really don't need them, still use them. Like webshops. If you make it hard for me to spend my money, I'll spend it elsewhere. But sometimes a site you absolutely need still uses one, and then what?

@ellane @kranzkrone @roblen my pet peeve are those "fonts" that are actually mathematical symbols. I immediately judge people who write their user names in those "fonts" to look cool or edgy or whatever people go for these days. I know it is mostly ignorance rather than malice...

Seems like time to put Asimov's 3 laws of robotics into the legal code -- I'd think that captchas you can't solve violate both the first and second.

I use a Microsoft Surface Pro for whiteboarding in class. There's a lot to complain about MS, especially Windows, especially Windows 11 -- but the whiteboarding experience on the Surface Pro is the best I've experienced, except for one thing (and this is a change in just the last couple of years).
It won't let me whiteboard without an Internet connection. I get it that I'd need a connection to collaboratively whiteboard (I don't) or to sync to OneDrive so I can access it on another computer (I don't care), but I shouldn't have to spend the time trying to get the tablet to reconnect every time I walk to the lecture hall just do I can draw lines and squiggles on a screen.
Which is why I invested time in learning #FreeCAD this weekend instead of going the easier route of using TinkerCAD or others. I also contributed money to the devs.
There are still apps and services with one time payment or even lifetime licenses. Rare, but I like those. VanceAi is one of such. With online upscaler I'd spend thousands of € in tokens and be reliant on their servers, I paid like 100€ for lifetime desktop software that runs LLMs on my GPU and CPU and I'm not limited by amount of images I process entirely offline. But yeah, it's less and less common these days.
I get all of my software from vendors at strip-mall parking lots on Sunday mornings where the vendors set up folding tables and boxes full of 5.25" floppies

While I prefer one-time payments, I’m not opposed to subscriptions. They can make it easier to try out software you aren’t certain about, or just use temporarily, and it helps pay for continued development. The real issue is the dark patterns often associated with subscriptions, which is why I’ll only subscribe within the App Store
The one that kills me is when you buy a new car they want you to subscribe to be able to use your seat warmers!
How about I bill you for the gas for carrying them around and not being able to use them?
the MBA explanation for subscription services is that they smooth out revenue throughout the year; instead of a big jump when you do a release, you have a much more predictable stream. This makes a company less risky to shareholders, so the value of stock increases, which is what corporations are incentivized to do.
It's not individuals being greedy, it's the rules of the economic system we live in. Want to reduce subscriptions? You have to come up with a better system of incentives.
There is a place for subscriptions but predatory pricing encourages piracy and more importantly- alternatives - subscriptions are often targeted at commercial agencies thinking that customisation is needed and costs can be easily passed on. I refuse to “rent” unless there is a compelling ongoing service.

Then I was told 3 minutes before stage time that... my #mythology book is not being sold at the festival.
Because... by Hungarian law, you can't sell #lgbtq content within 200 meters of a school.

Ja sicher, dass es Regulierung braucht, sehe ich ja auch so, aber ich finde, die andere Seite - wie man Gemeinschaft im realen Leben fördert - wird zu wenig beachtet. Meist sind doch soziale Aktivitäten und Kultur (außer Vorzeige-"Hochkultur") die ersten Dinge, die überall gestrichen werden.

If I could help people understand ONE thing about chronic illness - it would be that you can’t understand until it happens to you.
You can learn about it, you can empathize - but until you feel the crushing monotony of constant suffering - you won’t truly “get” it.
If a healthy person was put in my body ala Freaky Friday - they wouldn’t have a clue what to do.
They would wake up feeling hungover despite not having a drop of alcohol. Joints dislocated - in searing pain. Bone tired - the fatigue you get when you have the flu - only worse.
They would try and get up - thinking it will pass. The room spins. They begin sweating and become nauseous. They try and sit back down but faint instead.
They come to on the floor - confused, disoriented and in even more pain.
They suddenly realize their face is on fire and their skin itches. Wait a minute … is that a wheeze? They start to panic because they can’t quite catch their breath, their lips are tingling and there are hives spreading all over their body.
They reach for a glass of water - but they struggle to grasp the cup. Even their fingers are dislocating.
They try and swallow - only to cough and sputter it back up - exhausted from the effort and frightened by how quickly their throat is swelling.
This isn’t an outlier - this is how I start MOST mornings. A healthy person wouldn’t have a clue what to do. They would assume they had caught some terrible illness and likely go to the hospital.
Only the hospital can’t help either - because this is chronic illness.
They may run tests. Pacify you by doing the bare minimum required to prove you’re not going to die.
They tell you you’re “fine” and send you on your way … only you’re anything but fine. You’re suffering - but not dying.
That’s life with chronic illness. It’s feeling like you have the flu every single day - only you know there’s no end in sight.
It’s dragging yourself out of bed to hydrate, eat and shower in the hopes you can avoid losing what little autonomy you have left.
It’s the painful knowledge that the medical system can’t help you. That no one is coming to save you. That this is your new “normal” … day in and day out just fighting to minimize suffering and hold onto your baseline.
Please have compassion for the chronically ill people in your life. Ask them how you can help - and then actually LISTEN to what they tell you.
Don’t suggest “fixes” that won’t actually work - and don’t minimize their suffering or pretend to understand it.
It’s a difficult & frightening existence - we are living in the grey. We often have a quality of life that rates lower than many terminal illnesses - but our conditions won’t actually kill us.
As a result people grow bored of our suffering - and we end up lonely & abandoned.
You can help by being an ally. Be a kind & empathetic ear. Help with activities of daily living. Wear a mask in solidarity. Keep us company and don’t make us hide our pain. Let us just BE - exactly as we are.
Appreciate & protect your good health. You will thank us.

For those that aren't aware, there was a X7.1 solar flare on Oct 1. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center is predicting the CME from that event will arrive sometime Oct 4 & 5 as a G2/3 storm!
Forecasted Timing:
North America: Early night on Oct 3 and Oct 4
Europe: Most of Oct 4 and Oct 5
Asia/Pacific: Early morning Oct 3 and most of Oct 4?
UPDATE: The sun just kicked out a HUGE X9(!!!!!!) flare!!! Could be an exciting weekend for aurorae!!!

Does this mean the peak only happened yesterday and now everything is back to normal?

I would just love to know if I have any chance to see them in Middle Europe. (we had some this summer that I didn't know about and slept right through them and I almost cried when the others told me about it)

Like I shared in the original post, the geomagnetic activity (measured with the Kp index) is expected to pick up about 8 hours from now. A Kp value of 6 or above is considered a significant event and could be visible in middle Europe.

Sun just kicked out a X9 flare near centre disk moments ago. Might be an interesting few days for aurora sightings
To temper expectations, I'll remind everyone that the space weather guys don't have the best record of accuracy, so take it with a grain of salt. It might be a dud, or it might be even more active than they expect. I've seen both this summer.
But we've got multiple factors that give me May aurora storm vibes:
- Happening on a weekend
- Multiple closely spaced X-class flares
- New moon (extra dark)
If you've been looking for a chance to see the aurora, this weekend might be it!

To be fair, I've heard space weather forecasting described as like weather forecasting but with only 3 or 4 thermometers scattered around a continent to make predictions from. It's hard!
(But I'm really hoping for a good show over the next few days! Thanks for posting about it, hopefully lots of people will get outside and look up!)
@sundogplanets Yeah, I'm not trying to disparage them. Like you say, plasma physics isn't easy at the best of times and they don't have a lot of data to work off of. The fact that they can forecast this stuff at all is kind of amazing.

Indeed, but I only have the lower ranks of security wizardry 
But I once got spam mail offering nazi rock music, so I pressed charges at the police. Nothing happened for months.
Then I got a phone call from the state security department of the local police to testify. Should I bring a CD with the email? Noooo! Print it out! Okay
I arrived there and a state security specialist took me to his office. It took 5 minutes to boot Windows 95 (no joke) on his old desktop PC and when he started to type with two fingers I said: "You won't be able to do anything. The mail was sent from Italy. This stuff isn't indictable in Italy."
"How do you know it was sent from Italy?!?"
Well, I'm an adept of the old sorcery of reading the ancient runes of *hand gesture* email headers!
I tried to explain that it came from an account with Tiscali Italy, was sent to Tiscali Germany and so on. I scared the shit out of him 
@sashag Yeah, it's not even security wizardry. It's just being adept enough at computers to know there are multiple levels to software and a lot of times getting the information you're interested in just requires taking the time to look one level down.

I hope the aurora in the northern hemisphere becomes a strong reflector for radio signals from Oceania, including YB land, to communicate with Amateur radio operators in Europe and North America. Wow, that would be so much fun! de YDØRTA. #AmateurRadio
