A timely reminder that it’s literally impossible to steal votes with voting machines that produce paper ballots, like the ones used in all 7 swing states in 2020. Why? Because you can do hand recounts and compare those totals to the vote tallies reported by the machines. Unless Trump voters were ALL stupid enough to fail to notice that their Trump vote was changed to Biden on their paper ballot, then their vote wasn’t changed… as proven by the hand recounts.

Remember that? Yep, seems to be fixed , particularly thanks to @Emmanuel Florac pointing out the rather low memory for a Ryzen system. I did do a bit more than just doubling the memory, we went quadruple, and now have 16G of RAM. Oddly the system grew with the memory increase, what was a 2.xxG system, heavier when Firefox was part of the mix is now a 3.xx system pushing 4G when Firefox is running, not sure what's up with that. Hasn't been anymore crashes or hangs so far, knock on wood. I'm sure the HD will fail at some point, but not for a while at least, it's a second had drive from the room mate, cheaper and saved me having to go out to get one, though that last one wound up pointless because of the memory issue.
So, got a running computer for something like $60 rather than buying one for around $160, saving money's always good.
So, for reasons my Asahi Linux experiment has ended, and I went back to one of my older computers. This one had been replaced by a convertible laptop that I expected to take over my tablet duties, but that failed as it was too big, bulky and heavy for that job. Fine computer, just a waste of money on features I didn't need.
It's predecessor became my lazer engraving computer, at least until it's hard drive died. But, that wasn't it's first problem, for the longest time it's had issues, I mean these specs don't look bad, do they?
Yet it had a habit of locking up, especially when Firefox was running. Now, I brought the computer back to life using an old M2 drive my room mate didn't need any more, and was hoping that the issues were simply related to the HD, maybe some kind of virtual memory issue using the unreliable HD.
Nope, still having bog downs, and the entire computer actually froze this time, so I guess there's something really wrong with it, unless anyone has an idea of what's wrong.

Yep, I said non-candy, ever since I became aware of the Teal Pumpkin Project I've made it a point to have something non-food, this year it was ducks. Yep, those rubber ones everyone loves, got a decent sized batch via WalMart, and gave the kids a choice of candy or choosing from the bucket of ducks (is that a ducket?). With how much they loved them, I think we'll have to do it again next year, maybe make the ducks a regular thing, maybe even cut back on candy, dunno.

Hey Aus Gardenators, can you recommend me some garden dwellers suitable for our front side garden? The garden bed is (will be) at ground level and empty, with composted manure added and a weed mat and mulch on top, so it’s not too bad a starting point. Climate is outer-west Melbourne, but a bit drier because it’s in a rain shadow area. Ideally very low water requirements and drought tolerant, but needing a bit of a drink occasionally is fine.
The garden bed size and shape itself is the first constraint - about 60cm wide and 9M long, with concrete on all 4 sides. One long edge is a tall fence with the next door neighbour’s driveway against the fence, the other long edge is a concrete path. There is probably a gas line in the general area, so disruptive roots is a no-no.
The other wish is that whatever goes along the side needs to provide afternoon shade, so needs to be in the 3-5M tall range without being too wide to block the path. Maybe trees with the canopy trained to start at about 2M high would work? A couple of larger trees and in-filling with shorter shrubs would also work.
We already have Pittosporums and Acmenas in long narrow garden beds, and they are doing pretty well!
I would probably continue to use pittosporums. Maybe melaleuca viminalis if you want to attract birds, but they’re hard plants to keep narrow and dense.
@neoluddite @futzle As someone who has killed >1000 pittos in the last 5 years I recommend any trunk >8cm diameter, cut it off, then drill a bunch of angled holes into the top of the stump. So if it rains they fill up with water, and if it's dry the trunk dries right down inside.
@evcricket @neoluddite It took us years to eliminate the pittosporums that the builder planted in order to give the house we bought a false sense of seclusion in the back yard. Never again.

@GustavinoBevilacqua Also if you dig tunnels to run the cars through, they'll just get queued up at the tunnels. The only solution to motor traffic is making every other option better, and this will do that.

Given that after the city was entirely destroyed during world war II, they rebuilt using the technique of "let's just bulldoze the rubble over the unexploded bombs and rebuild the city upon that", they're not exactly fond of digging tunnels in Brest.

Because under the roundabout there is a creek, you moron! And there is no space to make ramps long enough to underpass even the creek.

Do you happen to know where I could see how much through traffic there is now? I'm curious how big of a reduction this is expected to be, since they still allow driving *to* everything in the LTZ. How many people are just driving through Paris and not stopping somewhere? @spacehobo
@smolwaffle I think the circulation pattern of preventing Champs-Elysées traffic from going down Rue de Rivoli has kind of already been put in place, and this just strengthens it.
All these changes really make me want to visit again. Last there in 2019 and it was thick with car traffic. Walking there has been great forever in many spots, but I expect it will be even nicer now, not to mention the biking improvements. Never biked there. @straphanger
@smolwaffle @spacehobo I am also curious to see whether car drivers will really avoid going through there, since anyway there isn't any clear way to enforce this. I live there so I will see.
@avron @smolwaffle So the way these things work in the UK is that ANPR cameras note the entry and exit times of any motor vehicle at the perimeter. You then set a minimum amount of time that any car needs to be inside the controlled area. So if someone enters at one side and exits the other, they're allowed so long as they spent an hour or so between. If they cut through the area too quickly, they get a fine.
@spacehobo @smolwaffle Ah, I did not know that, interesting. I have not heard of such plans for here (and I read the local newspaper daily). Perhaps local authorities prefer to wait and see first.
That is, the urban core is divided into slices, and barriers are erected so that you have to use the ring road to get from one slice to another. You can drive TO anywhere, but not THROUGH everywhere.

Seems tricky to catch everyone driving through and not catch people who make a short stop. Seeing someone going back out the same direction they came from is a good indication that they went to a place. And if they're there for 3h then it doesn't much matter which way they come out - they stopped for a while.
Maybe the 10min cafe stop en route isn't desirable anyway. @avron @straphanger
@smolwaffle @avron Yeah, if people exit from the same place they entered, usually that's fine. There are distance/time algorithms that work it all out.

@spacehobo @smolwaffle Self declarations (you print and sign yourself a paper, or the online version) were mentioned as a valid evidence, like we had during covid. Besides, there is very rarely any police to monitor traffic, so I don't expect much here.
This is great! Any insights on how "destination traffic” is going to be policed? Presumably it's going to be quite easy to claim to have business in the zone and therefore be able to drive into it...
I've experienced this in downtown Firenze--it's fantastic. The motor vehicle tailbacks working around it, not so much, but if you're using a car in Firenze you're #doingItWrong
