Seems to be fixed

Remember that? Yep, seems to be fixed , particularly thanks to @Emmanuel Florac pointing out the rather low memory for a Ryzen system. I did do a bit more than just doubling the memory, we went quadruple, and now have 16G of RAM. Oddly the system grew with the memory increase, what was a 2.xxG system, heavier when Firefox was part of the mix is now a 3.xx system pushing 4G when Firefox is running, not sure what's up with that. Hasn't been anymore crashes or hangs so far, knock on wood. I'm sure the HD will fail at some point, but not for a while at least, it's a second had drive from the room mate, cheaper and saved me having to go out to get one, though that last one wound up pointless because of the memory issue.

So, got a running computer for something like $60 rather than buying one for around $160, saving money's always good.

#Linux

Well that was sadly expected

So, for reasons my Asahi Linux experiment has ended, and I went back to one of my older computers. This one had been replaced by a convertible laptop that I expected to take over my tablet duties, but that failed as it was too big, bulky and heavy for that job. Fine computer, just a waste of money on features I didn't need.

It's predecessor became my lazer engraving computer, at least until it's hard drive died. But, that wasn't it's first problem, for the longest time it's had issues, I mean these specs don't look bad, do they?

Yet it had a habit of locking up, especially when Firefox was running. Now, I brought the computer back to life using an old M2 drive my room mate didn't need any more, and was hoping that the issues were simply related to the HD, maybe some kind of virtual memory issue using the unreliable HD.

Nope, still having bog downs, and the entire computer actually froze this time, so I guess there's something really wrong with it, unless anyone has an idea of what's wrong.

Halloween after action report

So, Halloween was a good night, not a great one. Pretty typical, trick or treaters started showing up 'round 1800 and were done by around 2030.

Guessed right on candy and non-candy goodies, me and @Vik-Thor / Lirleni Hankeshe nearly gave everything away.

Yep, I said non-candy, ever since I became aware of the Teal Pumpkin Project I've made it a point to have something non-food, this year it was ducks. Yep, those rubber ones everyone loves, got a decent sized batch via WalMart, and gave the kids a choice of candy or choosing from the bucket of ducks (is that a ducket?). With how much they loved them, I think we'll have to do it again next year, maybe make the ducks a regular thing, maybe even cut back on candy, dunno.

Power tool shenanigans

So, I've bought me a couple new toys, a power washer and a drill & impact gun combo.

So, first the power washer, which is basically a drill with a water pump. No really...

Image/Photo

It's a 40V unit to get the power you need, but comes with the small 2.5A battery, because can you imagine the balance with a 5 amp? Besides, for the kind of work you're going to use this for, you can easily swap the batteries, assuming you even need to. Definitely going to look into the available accessories, and perhaps other companies accessories that'll fit, because I don't think the input is proprietary, it just looks like a standard size quick release. I did have trouble finding one of these since they're being clearanced or something, just look at that price. I suspect people have been snapping them up for the battery, because I'm pretty sure you can't get even the small battery as cheap as this is going for. Funny thing, I wound up buying the last one at the Alton IL store as they were the nearest store I could find with one in stock, and as we're pulling up, I'm telling @Vik-Thor / Lirleni Hankeshe about how it's been a long time since I've been there, and the last was me picking up a delivery at that store going to Godfrey since I happened to be in the area, and... Yeah, we wound up grabbing a delivery to Godfrey.

Now as to the other one, I picked up a drill and impact kit on clearance at WalMart, one of the Hart 20V products. Now I have and am happy with the 40V Hart lawn equipment I have, it's basically a limited line of old Ryobi products made with lower quality plastics in a different colour and with a re-pinned battery from the same manufacturer, hence trying a 20V now that I kinda need a new drill. The first one I bought was only a drill, and clearly a re-pack, so I wasn't surprised when the batteries wouldn't charge, instead flashing an error. This however is completely brand new, factory sealed box, and... Yeah, same problem.

I think I'm done with Hart 20V, and possibly switching entirely to Ryobi, since I have a curb salvaged lawn mower that needs repair, a self propelled 40V that was thrown out as it didn't work any more, sans batteries and charger. My plan was to hit it with a little WD40, and then lube it up, and test it using a motorcycle battery assuming I could find the pin outs. Nice thing about DC, the motor'll work even on 12V, just won't have any real power, but enough for testing. Now, I have a battery and a charger, so... Yep, if it works, I just need a bigger battery, and I have a better mower for free.

So, I'm still on the hunt for a homeowner grade drill, but no rush, my old B&D 18V still works, the batteries are just being a bit flaky about taking a charge, hence the casual search.

Anyone know if there's any non-networking USB to Ethernet adapters?

With how many Ethernet cables I have kicking around, and the upcoming possibility of needing a really long USB cord, it occurred to me to wonder why I can't use an Ethernet cord for the job? It's got better shielding and more than enough conductors, so why not a simple adapter?

Some Friendica advice please

So, as I've already announced, or rather another me announced, we're planning on shutting down my Mastodon instance in the future, and switching to a hosted #Friencica and prolly merging this account in there too.

I do have some questions about how to set up accounts, my Mastodon currently has five:
admin
personal, because you never run as root
taurnation, art & link sharing group
recalls, link sharing group
Xnews, stuff related to my work

So, the question are

  1. How to do this on Friendica, is there any difference between additional account and creating a new user?
  2. How exactly does a community blog work, as taurnation and recalls might be better arranged as such, that way others can contribute.
  3. How can one theme, is that server side only? And how does one create a theme?

If I win the lottery, I'm starting an oddimotive collection

No, that's not a misspelling, I don't care how rich I get, any car collection I start isn't going to be respectable, it's going to be weird and prolly dumb stuff that amuses me to preserve.
How dumb? Well, my first two choices are the AMC Eagle Kammback...

and the Dodge Rampage

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:198…

Seriously, how does one choose between a four wheel drive Gremlin, and a front wheel drive car based pickup that had a higher load capacity (a true ¼ ton capacity) than an S-10 or Ranger?

Third choice? Oh that'd prolly be a Subaru Legacy Outback Sport Utility Sedan.

Yes, that's the proper name of this second coming of the AMC Eagle, back when the Outback was a package, not a model.

Shoe recommendation

Hey y'all, for those that don't know, I do deliveries, so I'm on my feet a lot, and I'm already wearing out my shoes, so it's time for new.

No real feet problems beyond the obvious sore feet from walking so much (over 8K steps a day according to my watch), so good padding or room for inserts is important. I'm thinking possibly some manner of boots maybe for durability and traction.

Being frugal, I'm looking for the best bargain, rather than the cheap stuff I've been getting. Cheap is easy to find, frugal not so much.

Selfie time

So, I don't normally do this, I mean nothing really changes from day to day or even month to month, so what's the point?

Well, this time something changed, I'm back to wearing glasses, progressive bifocals. I got LASIK four years ago, but unfortunately that's not a perfect fix, so here we go again.

#Selfie #photo

Als Antwort auf Xoa Gray

@Xoa Gray Yeah, I know it's not supposed to hold up great if'n you're near sighted, plus as you get older bifocals are inevitable, even with Lasik. Well, I could just keep using reading glasses, but fumbling around for them, breaking or losing them was getting old. As to LASIK, I think some of it depends on the cost, with insurance, I think it was like $500, which is what, 4 to 5 years worth of glasses, maybe a bit more if'n you don't do annual exams? In most cases it should last long enough that you'll break even at worst.

Future of my Asahi Linux set up

So, having some problems, nothing major, and they might be of my own doing, at least as far as things not working right.
As to what I can do with it, that's a bigger problem, and not #AsahiLinux 's fault. I do wonder why there's so little support for ARM on Linux. I mean there's not that many devices out there, but it is growing, heck I think Tuxedo is bringing one out.

Ideally any Linux system I use would be running only native software and nothing Electron, but that's rather unrealistic. Still, things are really bad over here, no DropBox at all, ditto for #sengiapp and #fedistar , Telegram and Signal are via Flatpaks and Snaps IIRC, while still more is thanks to Copr. I can switch to MacOS, but that's clunky and a bit of a pain to do.
I will be redoing things, using Gnome as the system as the other choice, KDE I don't like. Well, I don't like either, I tried Gnome back when 40 was new, and it felt more like Android or IOS than a desktop OS, while KDE I find too hard to figure things out, so many options, things in so many places. Mind you Wayland only makes things worse, many things handled by X11, have to be handled by the DE, and I've inflicted Cosmic on m'self of course. I suppose I should give Gnome a shot, and if'n I don't like that, Cosmic again on a system that is purer than this mess.

Failing that, not sure what I'm going to do. I will be installing Fedora on the Craptop to try the X64 version, after all Asahi is based on it, and I do like Asahi. After that... Dunno, maybe fix my old computer, or maybe by a tiny system, and run either Fedora or Mint:DE on it.

Good day

Not much to talk about mind you, spent most of the day goofing on the computer, however we did get the truck's oil changed, and got it washed, both of which were badly over due, not good when you drive for a living.

Tomorrow will be mostly the usual stuff, grocery shopping after goofing around for a while, however I do have an eye exam planned. Got LASIK years ago, but being near sighted, I knew it was possible that it might not stick, and I've been needing to use reading glasses more and more, so...

So I gots me a new desk

Now the old one was neither that old nor that bad, aside from being short, like with my chair in the lowest position my knees were level with the desktop short. Aside from that it was also too thick, and had a full length cable tray along the back, meaning I couldn't clamp anything to the desk because it was too thick. So lots of little nuisances, but still a nice desk that I need to get to selling.
I was looking at L shaped desks, and had a couple Ikea models I was looking at, but was lazy about going after, so I missed on those. I settled for this odd ball

Image/Photo

Yeah, not exactly L shaped, but definitely oddly shaped as you can see. In fact what you can't see are the notches on the sides for the top of the legs. I do wish it was a little wider as the lazer is a bit close, but it's good enough. The odd part is this cut out

Image/Photo

I'm assuming it's for a keyboard tray, but it's just slightly narrower than my favorite one that I have

Image/Photo

Of course that one pulls out and raises up, so I guess a regular one would work fine, and I guess you're supposed to store your chair there? Problem is that my standard sized chair with arms won't fit in there as the arms hit the desk, so...?

Overall, weird desk, but there is a label underneath, so I guess I'll look the desk up and see what the manufacturer had in mind.

Ceiling fan replaced

Finally got around to it, partially because I was waiting for the fan to arrive on a slow boat from China... Seriously, how did it take so long when the shipper was FedEx? Any how, fan installed, works fine, though I had to get a bit creative with how janky the previous install was. This one isn't perfect, but it should be fine, though I will admit to being worried about how old the wires were, I was kinda afraid they'd short to the box, but things seem good.

I must say, it's amazing how small a ceiling fan can be. This one isn't traditional by any means, and me and @Vik-Thor / Lirleni Hankeshe were a bit surprised at how small the fan is, but it does seem to move enough air. It's a half the size of the old traditional one, and a fraction of the weight.

Prolly get more of these in the future, though I'll spend more and get more interesting lights, maybe colour changing LEDs in the future, and larger or more interesting shaped lights, since you can do lots of neat things with LEDs.

Is it strange that I have a favorite flashlight?

Yeah, I do...

Image/Photo

That's a Black and Decker VPX flashlight, one of their many consumer power tool lines they've had and discarded over the years. I don't know why they can't settle on a standard, but frankly this one is great, look at the battery

Image/Photo

Nice little removable 7V (that's odd) battery, in this case an aftermarket battery. I got the light free at an old job, a miss sort, not something they want, so trash. One charger and two batteries from Amazon, and I've a flashlight that's served me for... Ten years? I don't even know at this point. True, that voltage would limit what kinds of tools you could do, prolly flashlights, power screw drivers and not sure what else.

Oh, did I mention the lanyard and belt clip?

Image/Photo

Yep, those are covered. Need to point the light in a different direction than the flashlight?

Image/Photo

It's got that covered too.

Working on the dining room ceiling fan

And I shouldn't be surprised by what I found, but I am. I kinda wonder what the kitchen looked like originally, since the other weirdly placed lamp had a similar sized hole in the ceiling. In this case, we had a ceiling fan attached to a home made support, with the electrical connection made outside of a box. Looks like they pulled out either a can light or a bathroom fan, I'm leaning towards the former, because that armored cable would've led to the actual light, and it explains the ground with a crimped ring on it and the metal ring around the hole.

So, off to Menards I go for a proper fan mount, and then I have to figure a way to crawl out to where the wiring is, removed the remains of the old electrical, and then fit in new proper parts.

Bad news, I owed $528 in fees and interest.

Yeah, let's not do that again. I've already paid them my first three quarterlies for this year, so I don't have to think about taxes until... I think early next year? I'll find out before it's due, but I'm setting aside about twice as much this year.

Level 1 charging is slow

So, remember that story going around with someone's Kia or Hyundai needing over forty hours to charge? I thought that was weird, but admittedly I haven't kept up with how long it takes to charge a modern EV. When we had the Leaf, it was around 20 hours on level 1 which didn't matter as we always used level 2, which was 8 to 12 hours.

So, just got done putting in a proper charger rather than using the portable, since the Chevy portable kinda sucks, so we now have a level 2 Emporia charger. When I set up the app, I set it to 40Amp breaker even though it's on a 50 Amp as I'm a little paranoid. This does mean it will be slower than the max, but looking at EvoCharge's website, I think it'll work just fine, 8 hours. And if'n we used level one, 46 hours. Wow, it takes a long time now at level 1, I guess the batteries are just that big now.

Today...

So, #Today ...
Not a great day, stomach is bothering me and I'm really tired. For that last one, I wonder if'n I'm swinging nocturnal again, this happens, though it's been quite a few years since it last happened, I didn't think it'd happen again.
Can't say #yesterday helped, I finally got started with tearing down the pool deck in the back. We got rid of the pool, too much work, too much money for something we barely used when we could even get it balanced and all. The deck is so rotten that when I went to unscrew the boards, just pushing down on the screw caused it to sink into the wood, and some of the planks are coming up in pieces. Despite that, they somehow are well anchored in the wood, and pulling them up with a prybar and hammer is a lot of work. The palms of my hands hurt, particularly the right as I'm right handed.
As to today, ran over to the auto parts store for some oil, my engine uses a quart every 3K miles or so, something that the dealer swears is normal. I don't believe it, but with the small number of Subaru dealers here, particularly in my part of the county, I'm kinda stuck. Also grabbed some push in body holders to re-secure the dead pedal to the floor, but they're not holding real well for some reason.
Ran over to the garage to find out why my tire warning light was on after having gotten four tires and a sensor a month or so ago. They'd told me one was dead and the others were dying... Well, apparently dying fast, so $177 spent. Luckily the company is in a position to easy absorb that.
No more work on truck or deck today, kinda drizzling out here, I don't think it knows what it wants to do. Also means no mowing the lawn, mowing wet grass is a bad idea, hard on the mower and dulls the blade faster. Do need to do household and company finances, pay bills, balance accounts, all that fun stuff, but later, finish surfing and then lay down for a bit.

#tomorrow , back to work. This will be my last three day workweek, I really need to get back to working more. Really I'd love to do a three day and fill in the gap with other apps, but it's been dead out there.

#upcoming will be getting a Chevy Bolt. I'd written previously about my two mostly likely choices, but a new player came on the scene. Actually a few did, the less serious was a Honda Stepwagn (no, that's not a misspell), we went to the other side to check one out as I've been long interested in it, but I'm a bit too big for it. That also means that a kei van is likely out too, and all that ignores the fact that my insurance, the only commercial that covers couriers, might not cover one. The Mazda 5 had crept onto the list, I finally knuckled down and did the research on just how much space it has, a surprisingly hard thing to do as few sites show the cargo capacity, and those that do either show behind the third row, or with the third row folded, never all seats down. But, with how things are going in the mideast, I think it'd be wise to go electric, i won't get the space increase, even if I modify the car, or at least not as much, but being able to charge at home might become a big savings, important when you drive for a living (90 miles a day or so).

A few days with Cosmic and Mint/Cinnamon things

So, as I mentioned, on Sat we switched to Cosmic, and we're liking it. It does have some issues, but the ones not caused by me are minor, and somewhat amusing, cursor alignment is slightly off, wallpaper placement setting won't stick, and that's about it. I don't like the dynamic workspaces, so I hope that'll change in the future, whether it gets removed or becomes optional I don't care.

Outside of that, it's nicely polished. I do have to do a test to verify that the other two problems are caused by me, but that's minor. It does do one thing far better than Cinnamon's Wayland spin, and that's handle localization customization. Dunno if it's a bug or a feature, but apparently Wayland doesn't allow customizing your local settings, ie if'n you choose US-English, you get M/D/Y date format, 12 hour clock and so on, that can't be changed, instead it's handled at the DE level I guess, because KDE doesn't have that problem, nor does Cosmic, but Cinnamon does. A nuisance, and something that likely won't be fixed for a while as the Mint team has a lot on their plate.

If'n you're a software developer, I'm sure they'd like help with any of their projects, but the one that I think is the biggest importance to Linux as a whole is the GTK porting project. I'm not sure what the name is, but the long and the short is that they're trying to jettison Libwaita which is really tied into Gnome apps, and causes problems, mostly theming for all GTK distros that aren't Gnome, Mate, Cinnamon, Xfce, etc. Yeah, they're doing that, keeping up Linux Mint development, switching to Wayland, all at the same time, ambitious, perhaps too much so.

#Linux #linuxmint #Cinnamon #AsahiLinux #CosmicDesktop #popos #system76 #system76cosmic

EDIT
Tested, clipboard works fine in Plasma(KDE) as does screenshot, which is Wayland like Cosmic, so this suggests a different and unexpected problem, I'd thought it was merely caused by two programs claiming the same keyboard shortcuts, but nope. This might mean Cosmic isn't usable enough yet.
EDIT 2
Just got the system updated, 210 updates, clipboard works, so does screen shot. Ugly border, and needs tooltips, but the screenshots will do.
EDIT 2A
Yay, WiFi works again, this was some kind of oops upstream, apparently the Broadcom drivers got broken about a week ago, but it finally works.

The Asahi after action report that wasn't

Don't worry, nothing bad, but my plans to call a week of using it, mostly for web surfing, but then that's most of my computer stuff, a good test kinda went haywire thanks to this thread.

My week went well running Asahi with the Cinnamon desktop. When I mentioned it on... I think it was the Reddit group for Asahi Linux, I was told of the terrible things that would happen running an X11 DE on a Wayland system. After a week of running it, I can report nothing happened, everything's been running smooth. Funny thing, I did do a short test of Cinnamon Wayland which is an alpha and ran into problems there, some odd behavior both of the main menu and the right click menu, tabs couldn't be dragged in Firefox, and I couldn't customize the date, time or keyboard to my taste, something that's apparently a Wayland issue.

So, here I was ready to do a re-install, since I'd started with the KDE flavor of Asahi, so I was thinking start over again with no desktop and then install Cinnamon. Then I saw a vid about the alpha release of Cosmic and was thinking maybe I can get it running and try that out... And then this morn I saw that thread, which came with an unofficial COPR to install Cosmic on Fedora.

Yeah, couldn't resist, so at the end of my morning surfing, I installed it, tweaked it just a touch, and that's it. Now I'm back on it, and it looks decent, there are some issues, and the janky set up I have going doesn't help, but it seems to work. Very bare bones at this point, but things are good enough, biggest problem has been wallpaper, the size setting doesn't seem to stay set. Still, that's the only problem, I can customize the time, date and keyboard no problem, Firefox tabs are draggable, everything seems to work so far. Not real big on the visible aqua window frame, but it's not terrible. Design seems nice and clean, and stable, though that last one will need to be tested.

So, I guess it's another week of testing, now with Cosmic. Oh the horror... Now if'n they'd fix the damn WiFi upstream.

Anyone know if @Sengi or @fedistar can be built to work on Asahi Linux? For Fedistar, there are build instructions on their page, dunno if'n the finished product would work on Asahi, but I run into a problem with Git involving I think a key and me not having permission to add it. Asahi Linux Cinnamon anyone?

Did I mention that I kinda dislike KDE? I don't hate it, but... Well, gotta have my Cinnamon, so...

Image/Photo

Yep, I installed it, and it's running nicely. So far the only problem I'm having is that the system doesn't like to wake unless I tap the power button, but that's minor. Oh, and I can't install @Sengi , I suspect that's not an option, ditto for @fedistar , so I'm not sure what I'll do for Mastodon over there, maybe Sengi web, not sure. Telegram was a big challenge, but I found a Snap pack for that. I would've preferred a Flatpak or AppImage, but the person that fixed Telegram so it works only chose to do a Snap.

So, aside from setting up @Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox and getting everything logged in on the web, it's up, running, and prolly by Monday, maybe Sunday, I'll give it a week as my day to day system and see how it holds up. Oh, I do have to get the download sidebar installed, that's a bit tricky as the extension for Firefox no longer exists, so I either have to pull it from my profile here, or I might've already set aside a copy that I can side load into it.

Trying Asahi Linux

So, dusted off @Vik-Thor / Lirleni Hankeshe 's old M1 Mac mini to try out Linux on it... And it's a mixed bag.

Right off the bat, the install procedure is odd if'n you're used to installing on a Windows machine. No live install, instead a Curl command is used to start the process from the Mac's terminal, with the first step being to partition the hard drive. Yes, the same HD holding the OS on the computer you're using. The partition feature is nice, after selecting the partition to re-size, you can specify the size you want by size or percentage.

Once done, it's time to reboot and pick your OS. This is a finicky process, not only do you need to do it a specific way, but I was doing other things and I guess the Mac went to sleep, as coloured static took over the screen. Problem was that it wouldn't wake up, so we had to reset which didn't work the first time... And I realized I didn't know my user name on the Mac, oops.

Ok, try three, and it works. Installer comes up automagically, Calamares, which doesn't seem to be used for anything more than setting up your account and basic settings like keyboard and time zone. Once that's done, its time to log in, something that was a little bit bumpy, and do the obvious, update the system.

More bumps in that process, but soon enough we have Linux up and running, Fedora KDE as it happens. I don't really like KDE, but your only desktop options are KDE or Gnome, and I really, really don't like the modern Gnome, I'd've rather they had Cinnamon, but KDE I can tolerate. The problem for me with KDE is two fold, too many customization options, and sometimes odd ways to do things, like 24 mode in the clock is in... clock widget settings, not the system date and time settings I think, nor region settings. Plus region settings are rather rigid, you can't just tweak certain aspects of the system to your taste, such as how dates are displayed, you need to find a region that matches your taste. And yes, that effects language, keyboard and other stuff. Cinnamon is more basic, but it works the way I expect a computer to work, in fact I've heard of it being held up as a really good choice for new users coming from Windows.

Now here's where things really become a problem, not all software works on the M1. Telegram? Nope. Signal? Nope. That's bad as I use IM to contact household and move files between devices. Telegram does have a web interface, but that's really clunky, and really only an emergency choice. I've still gotta try other software, but I suspect this can't be a daily driver as too little programs that I depend on will work here. But, we'll see.

Couldn't resist showing how janky this test system is. Yes, the mouse is resting atop the Mac, and we're using an old keyboard that's missing a key (I think I have some compatible keys around here somewhere though not that letter), and a VGA monitor. Yes, really, I ran short on digital monitors, so that's running a cheap Chinese HDMI to VGA converter powered by a wall wart as the Mac's USB port wasn't good enough. I don't remember the resolution, but it's fairly bonkers.

Starting to get caught up

So, I tend to be... Well, lazy seems wrong, I'm sure it's something mental health related, but a lot of things I plan on doing or start doing just don't get done. Well, that's changing, albeit at a slow pace, since I'm off work right now.

Yep, I'm on #vacation .
Why?
Well, I'm a gig work with a $500/wk goal, and July has been very good to me, I've made around $2800. I say around, because I'm waiting for a couple payments for not working to come in, one has and was more than triple expected, while I've been threatened with receiving the other one, but it hasn't happened yet.

So yeah, I'm way over goal, so I'm mostly goofing off with the occasional thing I meant to do getting done. Cleaned up the dresser today, finally got to looking at the ceiling fan yesterday, a year after it stopped working (sadly it looks like the fan died). Caught up on the lawn, that took a couple hours.

Tomorrow... Might finally get my taxes taken care of, maybe, getting them done after tax season is surprisingly difficult in #STL Also have a van I want to look at in... Warrenburg I think it was, which IIRC is out towards KC aka the other side of the state. Got a desk I want to buy because I'm not happy with the one I bought a month or so ago. Need to get the truck washed. And we're working on adding Linux to my husband's old M1 iMac.

There's also a solar panel, just a little tiny thing, that I've been meaning to install on the shed to do. A TV antenna for the house, some plumbing work, repair on an old Mac, and repairing a picture. Should also think about the rear yard, that could use a trim but isn't hugely important. Oh, pool deck needs to be torn down. Torn, can't take it apart as when I tried that, i pushed down on a screw with my drill, and it sank into the wood.

Yep, lots to do, and only the rest of the week to do it in... Well, then again I could take most of next week off too...

EDIT
Money's showing up in my earnings, which means it should be in the bank next Monday, so everyone's paid me.

Having a problem with FediStar

@fedistar I'm having problems launching the app, we're getting a shared library issue on LMDE

System info is in the pic, I tried launching from the terminal when choosing from the menu did nothing. Installation was from the DEB installer, though I've previously tried using the APPIMAGE with no better luck.

((this is a repost as my old blog/Friendica died before I could continue the thread))

Still sick

But getting better.

Sat I'd commented on a comment that I was feeling much better...

And Sunday I woke up feeling even crappier, needed a blanket and even that wasn't enough to fully combat the chill. Good news is I was feeling better by evening, and woke up this morning feeling good. Do have a sore throat, but it's minor now, while it was severe last night. I'm definitely short on energy, but aside from the lack of energy and a mild chill, feet are a little cold and I feel a little cold, but only inside, step out where it's mid to high 70s, and I feel fine.

Well, tomorrow we'll mask up, take my TussinDM with me, and see how work goes.

Babylon 5 predicted a fascist takeover

I shared this as a reply elsewhere, but I felt it deserved to be posted here. Fascists are predictable, and the show did a good job of showing it happening. Popularly elected President Santiago was killed when his ship was blown up returning from visiting the colonies. His VP took over and immediately cracked down on colony separatists who were officially blamed for the bombing. By the time of this episode, he had everything the way he wanted, so why risk a free press which might turn against you?

Of course that meant ISN would be back pretending to be free.

Biden has ended his campaign...

So what happens now?

Well, I think this was planned, I mean a break from campaigning for Covid only to step down instead of continuing his campaign? Considering how he's done almost everything as president, this shouldn't be a surprise, after all, it seems like as soon as he did, everyone starts backing her? Yeah, me thinks he took the time to make sure she would have full or at least majority support before quitting.

Really the only question at this point is how this effects the ballots as the primaries have already been held, and the candidates picked. Should we vote Biden/Harris? What happens if we elect him when he's no longer running? Or will the ballots be updated? New primaries maybe?

The ballots are really the only thing that has me worried right now, but I'll wait to panic

Ugh, I feel terrible

I think it's just a cold though, despite @Vik-Thor / Lirleni Hankeshe having been down with the big C all week, though I did test and got a very weak positive, enough to be within the false positive range.
I don't think it's C, as I've got all the usual cold symptoms, weird feeling in my chest I get when it's trying to take root there, chills, tiredness, coughing up phlegm, in fact the only thing that's slightly unusual is an ache across my shoulders. Considering the weather here, I've spent hours getting soaked to the bone one this week and another last week, in fact last week my trucker cap took on enough water to leave a puddle after being hung up while I used the bathroom. One problem with weather like this is that I have to use the defroster in the truck which in turn uses the A/C to keep the windshield from fogging up, and it's real hard to get a good temperature balance in 80 to 90° weather when you're soaking wet. In fact this Tues was even wetter, I'm still waiting for my shoes to dry out, despite throwing them in the dryer for 20 minutes when I got home.

So, not sure what I'm doing this weekend, the usual is just two grocery stores and Sunday brunch, so I might mask up and get at least the shopping done, dunno yet.

Cori Bush vs Wesley Bell

Who else from #STL has seen their ads?

Who is running Bush's campaign, but they're really doing their best to make her look bad. Bell's ads focus on what he perceives as her failures, failure to pass any bills, voting against the Infrastructure Act and generally not supporting Biden.

Her response?
To call him out for campaigning for a Republican, something he addressed at least a month ago, an old friend of his, and it was IIRC before he was even running for any office. Based on her ads, in a time where everyone is complaining about division, being friendly with Republicans is proof that he isn't a real Democrat.

Is it me, or is this old school mud slinging?

EDIT
Ok, to help me choose, this just came out: commondreams.org/news/wesley-b…

Honestly not sure how I feel about either one of them at this point.

What vehicle should I buy?

Posted this on my Mastodon already, but it's easier to write it over here, so here we go.

For those what don't know, I'm a gig worker, specifically I do deliveries, more specifically packages, preferably delivery routes.

For my purposes, I'm going to focus only on fuel economy, maintenance is important, but as my current vehicle is almost all dealer item for parts outside of bulbs, plugs and filters, I think anything would be an improvement. Right now I use a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek, which gets about 25MPG, and has about 55 cubic feet of cargo space. That cargo space is sometimes a problem, 75 or so would be better, but square would also help, the Cross has a sloping rear and the sides taper in a bit, so often I can't use all of the space it has. An example is that I didn't make good money yesterday as the whole zone wouldn't fit, so we had to cut out one of the sub-zones, which had a really negative impact on pay.

So, what are the candidates?
Ford Transit Connect, 123 cu ft, and roughly the same fuel economy. Obviously this opens up new gig options for me, but that doesn't really matter to me, I'm too old to be doing pallet loads and other big stuff frankly.

Chevy Bolt, Bolt, not Bolt EUV. About the same cargo space, but no fuel and significantly reduced maintenance, about $200 a month in savings just on fuel, but same cargo limitations.

Runners up are the Scion XB, 65cu ft of cargo space, around the same, maybe slightly better fuel economy. Mazda 5, not sure what the cargo space on that is, almost definitely better than what I have, especially if'n I remove both rows of seats. Mind you, the second row I'm not sure is designed to be removed, but like the others, I could make more room by removing it. Fuel economy I also am not sure about, but likely as good or better than what I'm getting.

So, what do y'all think I should get?
Do you have other suggestions?

My desk

Since there's a writer's prompt going around showing off work spaces, and this blog is my new home, and 'round a month or so ago, I got a new desk, how about I show off mine?

Image/Photo

Interesting desk, bit on the low side, and the L pulls out. My original plan was to put the engraver on the L, but it's too big for that, hence it being on the desk. Also the computer that runs the engraver, a wait station/POS system, was originally on the L, but I moved it left of my monitor when I moved the laptop under the monitor. I could raise up the desk a couple inches easily enough, just need a few leg levelers, however the L is a challenge as its on these really small casters, so I could go with levelers, or figure out some appropriate casters, not really sure.

And yes, the L does need cleaning or sorting, a bunch of my AliExpress orders have come in yesterday and today, that's created some of the mess, some is cards from my birthday last month, and the rest is merely stuff that has to be put away or displayed. I promise, it'll really get cleaned, soon. Yep, not like my other projects that sit for months or even years, nope, this will really get done, soon... Tomorrow. Yep, tomorrow.

Oh, and yes, it is in front of the window, which is covered with gridwall, I can decorate, display and store things without blocking out all of the light. I might look into putting a blind up there, that way I can block the light at times, we'll see. Admittedly that'll be hard as I've got the grid up, but...

Nearly done here

Ok, now that Venera is up, I'm getting this place fully set up. Contacts are imported, description updated, page customized now that customization works including custom fields on my profile, and password updated.

Hmm, for the #Linux users out there, how do I do a custom keyboard layout? I did find some instructions online, which worked great... Until I updated. Clearly I need something permanent, maybe copy the existing layout, rename, edit and insert it back into the keyboard layouts folder? Or will that get erased with an update?

And what does that have to do with this place? Well, as my desc says, I want to bring back the þ, and will once I move it to an easier place to type it.

This map of St Louis is really kinda interesting

Notice what's odd about it?

No? Well, that'd be that north is on the right. Yep, it's oriented so that the east is down, and it really how the #STL area developed, fanning out from a single crossing on the #mississippi river where the city was founded, something I've always found interesting about the grid here.
