OpenAI has announced that the US National Laboratories will use its deeply flawed AI models to help with "nuclear security."
So, for reasons my Asahi Linux experiment has ended, and I went back to one of my older computers. This one had been replaced by a convertible laptop that I expected to take over my tablet duties, but that failed as it was too big, bulky and heavy for that job. Fine computer, just a waste of money on features I didn't need.
It's predecessor became my lazer engraving computer, at least until it's hard drive died. But, that wasn't it's first problem, for the longest time it's had issues, I mean these specs don't look bad, do they?
Yet it had a habit of locking up, especially when Firefox was running. Now, I brought the computer back to life using an old M2 drive my room mate didn't need any more, and was hoping that the issues were simply related to the HD, maybe some kind of virtual memory issue using the unreliable HD.
Nope, still having bog downs, and the entire computer actually froze this time, so I guess there's something really wrong with it, unless anyone has an idea of what's wrong.
So, I've bought me a couple new toys, a power washer and a drill & impact gun combo.
So, first the power washer, which is basically a drill with a water pump. No really...
It's a 40V unit to get the power you need, but comes with the small 2.5A battery, because can you imagine the balance with a 5 amp? Besides, for the kind of work you're going to use this for, you can easily swap the batteries, assuming you even need to. Definitely going to look into the available accessories, and perhaps other companies accessories that'll fit, because I don't think the input is proprietary, it just looks like a standard size quick release. I did have trouble finding one of these since they're being clearanced or something, just look at that price. I suspect people have been snapping them up for the battery, because I'm pretty sure you can't get even the small battery as cheap as this is going for. Funny thing, I wound up buying the last one at the Alton IL store as they were the nearest store I could find with one in stock, and as we're pulling up, I'm telling @Vik-Thor / Lirleni Hankeshe about how it's been a long time since I've been there, and the last was me picking up a delivery at that store going to Godfrey since I happened to be in the area, and... Yeah, we wound up grabbing a delivery to Godfrey.
Now as to the other one, I picked up a drill and impact kit on clearance at WalMart, one of the Hart 20V products. Now I have and am happy with the 40V Hart lawn equipment I have, it's basically a limited line of old Ryobi products made with lower quality plastics in a different colour and with a re-pinned battery from the same manufacturer, hence trying a 20V now that I kinda need a new drill. The first one I bought was only a drill, and clearly a re-pack, so I wasn't surprised when the batteries wouldn't charge, instead flashing an error. This however is completely brand new, factory sealed box, and... Yeah, same problem.
I think I'm done with Hart 20V, and possibly switching entirely to Ryobi, since I have a curb salvaged lawn mower that needs repair, a self propelled 40V that was thrown out as it didn't work any more, sans batteries and charger. My plan was to hit it with a little WD40, and then lube it up, and test it using a motorcycle battery assuming I could find the pin outs. Nice thing about DC, the motor'll work even on 12V, just won't have any real power, but enough for testing. Now, I have a battery and a charger, so... Yep, if it works, I just need a bigger battery, and I have a better mower for free.
So, I'm still on the hunt for a homeowner grade drill, but no rush, my old B&D 18V still works, the batteries are just being a bit flaky about taking a charge, hence the casual search.

Now the old one was neither that old nor that bad, aside from being short, like with my chair in the lowest position my knees were level with the desktop short. Aside from that it was also too thick, and had a full length cable tray along the back, meaning I couldn't clamp anything to the desk because it was too thick. So lots of little nuisances, but still a nice desk that I need to get to selling.
I was looking at L shaped desks, and had a couple Ikea models I was looking at, but was lazy about going after, so I missed on those. I settled for this odd ball
Yeah, not exactly L shaped, but definitely oddly shaped as you can see. In fact what you can't see are the notches on the sides for the top of the legs. I do wish it was a little wider as the lazer is a bit close, but it's good enough. The odd part is this cut out
I'm assuming it's for a keyboard tray, but it's just slightly narrower than my favorite one that I have
Of course that one pulls out and raises up, so I guess a regular one would work fine, and I guess you're supposed to store your chair there? Problem is that my standard sized chair with arms won't fit in there as the arms hit the desk, so...?
Overall, weird desk, but there is a label underneath, so I guess I'll look the desk up and see what the manufacturer had in mind.

Finally got around to it, partially because I was waiting for the fan to arrive on a slow boat from China... Seriously, how did it take so long when the shipper was FedEx? Any how, fan installed, works fine, though I had to get a bit creative with how janky the previous install was. This one isn't perfect, but it should be fine, though I will admit to being worried about how old the wires were, I was kinda afraid they'd short to the box, but things seem good.
I must say, it's amazing how small a ceiling fan can be. This one isn't traditional by any means, and me and @Vik-Thor / Lirleni Hankeshe were a bit surprised at how small the fan is, but it does seem to move enough air. It's a half the size of the old traditional one, and a fraction of the weight.
Prolly get more of these in the future, though I'll spend more and get more interesting lights, maybe colour changing LEDs in the future, and larger or more interesting shaped lights, since you can do lots of neat things with LEDs.
Yeah, I do...
That's a Black and Decker VPX flashlight, one of their many consumer power tool lines they've had and discarded over the years. I don't know why they can't settle on a standard, but frankly this one is great, look at the battery
Nice little removable 7V (that's odd) battery, in this case an aftermarket battery. I got the light free at an old job, a miss sort, not something they want, so trash. One charger and two batteries from Amazon, and I've a flashlight that's served me for... Ten years? I don't even know at this point. True, that voltage would limit what kinds of tools you could do, prolly flashlights, power screw drivers and not sure what else.
Oh, did I mention the lanyard and belt clip?
Yep, those are covered. Need to point the light in a different direction than the flashlight?
It's got that covered too.
And I shouldn't be surprised by what I found, but I am. I kinda wonder what the kitchen looked like originally, since the other weirdly placed lamp had a similar sized hole in the ceiling. In this case, we had a ceiling fan attached to a home made support, with the electrical connection made outside of a box. Looks like they pulled out either a can light or a bathroom fan, I'm leaning towards the former, because that armored cable would've led to the actual light, and it explains the ground with a crimped ring on it and the metal ring around the hole.
So, off to Menards I go for a proper fan mount, and then I have to figure a way to crawl out to where the wiring is, removed the remains of the old electrical, and then fit in new proper parts.
