The long-running Fedi server mstdn.social (not to be confused with mastodon.social 🙂 ) has just received a takedown request from the Russian government for hosting @Bellingcat, a news site which has long been critical of Putin:

mstdn.social/@stux/11365246164…

Thankfully mstdn.social isn't in Russia so Putin has no power over it.

If anyone wants to turn this into a Streisand Effect kind of thing, you might want to follow @Bellingcat and slip a donation to @stux at mstdn.social/@stux/11362379158…

Holy shit.

The Russian gov send in an abuse request for the @Bellingcat to be removed from mstdn.social :amaze:

I am not gonna comply, and have replied to Hetzner

No way I'm gonna let the evils of the gremlin dictate stuff on anything I host

UPDATE: Hetzner ignores their requests and we're in the clear: mstdn.social/@stux/11366257336…

I've never been sure how I feel about @Bellingcat itself, just like I've never been quite sure how I feel about WikiLeaks as a project. But I know how I feel about censorship, and especially the abuse of copyright enforcement as censorship. So on that basis, that's a follow for Bellingcat from me.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Putin.

I have my suspicion that Bellingcat is a project aligned with FIVEEYES. Their stances closely track.

I put that point to them once and they neither denied nor confirmed.

The Five Eyes and Gladio, by its various names, were put in place after WWII as covert action capabilities which would survive and continue to function to resist another occupation of Europe by dictatorship. So was not a fan generally but yeah, are you folks up to the task at hand?

OK, but Bellingcat is funded by NED (#CIA) and @stux censors everyone pointing this out. stux falsely accuses people of being Russian trolls spreading misinformation even though Bellingcat’s publicly available Annual Accounts reports clearly states NED funding.

You literally suggest people to follow a CIA connected account and donating to someone who doesn’t like this connection being brought up. I wonder why.
