Holy shit.

The Russian gov send in an abuse request for the @Bellingcat to be removed from mstdn.social :amaze:

I am not gonna comply, and have replied to Hetzner

No way I'm gonna let the evils of the gremlin dictate stuff on anything I host

UPDATE: Hetzner ignores their requests and we're in the clear: mstdn.social/@stux/11366257336…

Nice!♥️ Got a reply and Hetzner just ignores the bullshit from the Kremlin

Wish it where that easy with the war in Ukraine..

@tobi from a legal perspective, the traditional response is "we refer you to Arkell v Pressdram, 1971" -which then requires any unfamiliar with that precedent to look it up before discovering the response is "fuck off"

that's not the point

they push to see how far they get

you would be surprised how far people can go just by complaining

they weren't successful here, but they are often successful elsewhere

just by complaining

unfortunately #russia has had some limited success harassing #hetzner in the past:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hetzner#…

however, you'll note the incident at the bottom of the incident list on wikipedia shows that hetzner has taken a new harder line towards russia

Thank you for posting this and thank you for your excellent response.

There's no end to how insidious Russian manipulation is in trying to shift views, and there's much too much apologia for it online — including on the Fediverse.

Being open and transparent about it like this is super helpful in combating it.

Als Antwort auf the magnificent rhys

@rhys i've been seeing a rising wave of russian propaganda in the streets, too. people are putting up pro-russian street art in here in the united states, especially near towns with Trump stores. i can't prove a connection, but i have my suspicions that this is no accident. it's really important right now that if you have the power to do so, start putting out anti-authoritarian propaganda in physical space

Als Antwort auf Mystery Babylon

@erosdiscordia @rhys it really is. it makes me feel a little hopeless about being ever able to reach people again, but it also gives me a shred of hope. this tells us that the people who are winning the propaganda wars think the kinds of propaganda we can create and disseminate the easiest works. it also gets me thinking about where i see the most christofascist messaging: on street corners. well guess what!? we got posterboards and magic markers, too.
Als Antwort auf Flex Foot

@FlexFoot @erosdiscordia @rhys there's some chance it's deliberately designed to split society, and run by russian assets. I'm sure things are bad in America but it's in a lot of people's interest to make them appear even worse than they are.

@tessarakt @th3rdsergeevich Roskomnadzor - Russian commission of monitoring, censoring and controlling the mass media. They are extremely aggressive since the 2022, banning tv shows, apps, books, movies, closing sites, reporting and sending violation reports and etc. They are extremely annoying

If we do need to comply with Hetzner on this, I'm gonna look into an option to get mstdn.social in-home, like literally so they won't be able to touch anything

But that's a last resort since I do not have the hardware not money for that currently

At least there's options just in case

If it comes to migrating the service away because of politically motivated cease and desist, then I would not be surprised if a provider like @freedominternet is more than happy to help you out. Their dedication to having an open and accessible internet aligns pretty well with this, after all. Before going the route of self-hosting stuff, I would give them a call.

Tell them that if they want to contact you they can download a Windows .exe file that functions (allegedly) as random number generator. That is, after all, what they ask others to do who wish to contact them.

but every media outlet should really have their own server on the fedi. this is our killer app for journalistic freedom. why AP should win.

it's why I always bring up @mondoweiss already running their own server. I'm sure they are constantly pissing off the Israeli govt, who will spin such stories as antisemitic and probably convince a few admins of that view.

we can't have access to important stories going viral dictated by a few rich people, VCs or corporate interests.

The head of Roskomnadzor is on the EU sanctions list, cf. eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-conten…

This action, again performed under his leadership, again "create[s] a censored information space that promotes, aids and condones the Russian armed aggression against Ukraine."

I would propose reporting this to the appropriate Commission service.

i prefer the less direct and more casual diss. they are used to direct conflict, but a little patronizing sleaze pisses them off more

something like

"Омич полуёбок, скажи ты наркоман? я просто тоже где то там живу, могли бы вместе уёбывать наркотики"

("Hey, half-fucker guy from Omsk, tell me, are you a junkie? Because I live here somewhere too, we could shoot drugs together")

@trebach @stevel @tobi another good one, albeit longer is Kurt Denke's reply when Monster came knocking on the door of his audio cable company. First he tears them a new one on technical matters then comes *this*

Send Putin the Russian joke about Stalin's pipe: Stalin can't find his pipe, so he calls in Beria, his head of the secret police. Stalin says,
"Beria, someone stole my pipe. Find the guy." Beria says, "I'll get right on it." About a half hour later, Stalin calls Beria back and says, "You can call off your dogs. The pipe fell being my desk." Beria says, "What a pity. We have 13 suspects and 12 have already confessed."

I had to look up Collateral Estoppel, so.
#TIL about Non-Mutual-Defensive #CollateralEstoppel where by "a defendant attempts to prevent a plaintiff from re-litigating an issue that was previously decided against the plaintiff in another lawsuit against a different party."

To put it another way, if Mr. Denke's defense was successful, and ruled on in his case, then Monster Cable couldn't attempt to use that failed issue against a different cable manufacturer when Monster Cable sued them for alleged Patent and Trade dress infringement.

I thought about this case.

1. As others noted: they didn't cite any broken law or offending text. Without any of this, IMHO Hetzner should just drop such a complaint.

2. As @Bellingcat is clearly a journalistic account, they have the protection of Art 5 GG. Even if you're not from Germany, Hetzer is and therefore this applies. Yes, this is meant for the state, but it should be applied to companies as well.

3. Ping some German journalists to push it to the general public.

This is just the latest in a string of problems I've been hearing about with Hetzner as a hosting provider: perhaps you should consider moving.
If @Bellingcat needs to go somewhere else, or wants to create a mirror somewhere, there are plenty of servers that would be happy to do so, with hosting companies that will have an immediate middle finger response to any requests for takedowns by the Russian government.
