I'm getting tired being told that URL lengths don't count towards post length on #Mastodon , when they do on the app that I use (for my iPhone). Notice how the character account has gone down by 87 with this link alone

Somebody complained about shortened URLs? Well, Mastodon is something between sanatory and sect.

If I remember correctly, there is a technical limit of about 186000 characters for a Friendica post.
In general, most Mastodon instances are set to allow something between 500 and 5000 characters per post.
One of many unnecessary and arbitrary technical restrictions of Mastodon. Another restriction is that you can only attach a maximum of 4 images to a post, for example.
Since many Mastodon mobile apps assume a maximum of 500 characters per post, these are counted down in the display. a link shortener can help to make better use of the few available characters.
However, if you often want to post longer posts - possibly with several images - you should consider whether a platform other than Mastodon might be more suitable for you personally.
