ALSO, I don’t want to hear that Black folx being attacked by racist is a UNIVERSAL fediverse issue because it’s NOT

Bluesky had a terrible rollout and I refused to share my codes with anyone AND yet, since they’ve opened things up, I have NOT received ONE “n'gger”, “go back to Africa”, or some form of “ape” comment there AND I SHARE THE EXACT SAME SHIT THERE THAT I DO HERE

So “good white folx” IT IS MASTODON‼️

Now fix it or get comfortable with becoming the next 4chan 🤷🏾‍♀️

@CatDad I keep seeing stuff where people demand this issue to be fixed, but the issue is... how? The whole architecture of the fediverse is built to allow for a multitude of small, independent instances that can be put up by everyone, with moderation done by the instance owners. And yes, you can block out problematic users and instances, but a determined bad actor can always change instances or spin up their own.

@kyonshi @CatDad I'm really not sure this is a moderation problem. As long as there are platforms that allow public sign-up, there's nothing to stop bad actors signing up. Sure, they can be booted, but only after damage is already done.
Only way to prevent harassment is to only federate with instances that vet all signups. And not just: OK, this is a human, but this is a trustworthy human.

There are tools, not integrated, that try to address this.

connect.iftas.org/library/ifta…

Not everyone uses such a tool.

There are proposals for integrating something into Mastodon, and those proposals all have their own issues:

#10304
Subscriptions to blocks and mutes from other accounts
Add support for something close to BlockTogether.org
github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…

#116
Support for subscribing to communal block lists
github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…

Please do keep in mind though that the quality of moderation on corporate platforms like Meta and Bluesky are typically backed by shit like these traumatized foreign workers who are given life-long PTSD in return for a two dollar wage:

Mastodon is (thankfully!) not able to follow the same model as everyone else. But solving this problem when you don't have big piles of VC cash to throw at sweatshop labor probably isn't as simple as it might seem. I'm certainly not saying there aren't improvements that can be made but it probably needs to be a community issue more than a Mastodon issue...and it might require some new funding models.

Mastodon is older and significantly more well known than BlueSky. The bigots and bigot instances and users pop up and the only effective way to deal with them is in a reactive manner, It's the issue with using a Blocklist.

Allowlists would allow users and servers to allow instances/users through. Letting users do allowlisting instead of blocklisting needs to be a part of mastodon. And so does allowlisting for instances.

One thing that may affect the urgency is the propagation. I'm not the target of racism, obviously, but on Twitter I saw it. Here, I don't, except in very rare instances where the target mentions it - because I'm not following them, they don't at me, and my instance is good with the blocks. To *me* Mastodon feels far less racist than Twitter (haven't seriously tried other platforms).

White people maybe "see" racism when it is blatantly obvious, but often not even then. Reason is clear: having been lifelong "trained" by white society to be Racists, all the daily "normal", "subtle", "subliminal", "hidden" etc Racist messages and tropes are designed to keep you Racist and not being able to see them.
That is why we BIPoC almost daily face the situation to be seen as overly sensitive, because almost all whites aren't even able to recognize the "normality" of racism: in their mannerisms, languages, behaviour, and so on.

So your comment is at least "funny", opposing the information you have just got from @Kim Crayton ~ Her/She and believing what you can see or not, has somehow more weight than what a BIWoC says, directly contradicting her.
Congratulations: normal behavior for a white male, I'd say.

Enjoy your Mastodon "without Racism". 😉

Do you not realize, that asking BIPoC targets of white Racism to move away from white Racists - instead of fighting white Racists yourself and protect BIPoC from them - is a quite typical thing white people do, who maybe believe not to be Racists but clearly are, just maybe not as bad as the openly Racists!?
It's another variation of white people telling BIPoC: "If you don't like it here -> leave."
