Switch to Public Social Media

Publicly owned digital media is our only protection against the oligarchy's total control of public information.

X to #Mastodon, Instagram to #Pixelfed, WhatsApp to Signal, Reddit to #Lemmy, Facebook Messenger to #Signal, Facebook to #Friendica, YouTube to #PeerTube, TikTok to #Loops

Note #Bluesky is owned by VCs and crypto bros. It is NOT public social media. Even if you are on Bluesky join #PublicSocialMedia today.

Obligatory reminder that #Signal relies on a centralized and proprietary server, and does not belong here.

Users of #WhatsApp #Telegram #Discord #Signal and #Threema etc should use #XMPP instead, which is #FreeSoftware and federated.

Users - check out #Quicksy (Android and iOS), #Prav, #Conversations, #Cheogram, #MonoclesChat, #Gajim, #Movim, #Monal...

Self-hosters, check out #Snikket.

I don't think there's a straightforward answer to that.

I mean, except for counting new profiles of people with the hashtag, but I imagine there are likely to be plenty of folks who convert but don't tag themselves.

You'd have to figure out a metric to determine which data points are a result of the movement and which are a result of normal platform growth.

It seems like a simple idea at the surface, but once you look into the nitty gritty of defining what a valid data point is, it gets more difficult.
