That is sad.

It's interesting to compare the challenges of participating on commercial social media vs this more DIY, home-grown approach.

Definitely worth it, though.

This is good advice. I have a backup alt account on a different instance where I filter out politics (some bleeds through but that’s ok) and it has been a life saver for those days where I need some time away from the ongoing apocalypse and I just want to have some benign social interactions and talk about knitting and silly stuff. It also works for when my main instance is experiencing technical difficulties or Drama.

While running my own server is something I've considered more than once, I don't like the idea of doing so as a rush job in case of emergency. And at the moment, that's what running my own instance in response to my current instance shutting down would be.

I would at the very least want an interim fedihome while I squint at manuals, and make sure I know what I'm getting into, so I can properly set it up.

This prospect saddens me and makes it a bit harder to advocate for it to folks used to more stable platforms (that are free).

Having. Lost a few forums over the years, I know that things will inevitably change, but it’d be nice if it were more on my terms. I’d think I’d try hosting my own server. Then I’m definitely paying for my use and can choose the software that best fits my needs.

@helianthropy Yes, you are right. I think this poll might oversimplify the scenario a bit, and that was not my intention.

I guess it's not really something I've had to think much about, having run my own instance for nearly a year, and only being on mastodon.social for a bit before that.

Many people are on smaller instances where you can really feel like part of a community. And losing that must be hard.
